Academics Take Issue With Prespa Agreement - Letter to the Editor

Image
To The Editor
As scholars and authors we wish to take issue with the distortion of the Prespa ‘agreement’ in some quarters, and portrayal of opponents as nationalist and extremists.
The agreement does not serve the needs of Macedonia or Greece. It shows no respect for international law, human rights and democratic principles.
An agreement trying to define political, historical and cultural boundaries between “classical Macedonia” and (would be) North Macedonia is a bizarre undertaking in the 21st century. The construction of identities is not for governments. Macedonia is subjected to arbitrary international engineering against the will of the people. With little public support a highly polarized atmosphere deepens internal divisions. The asymmetric ‘deal’ will not lessen regional tensions as only the weaker (Macedonian) side was forced to compromise, to force (North) Macedonia into NATO – itself in an identity crisis.
The deal denies constitutional sovereignty of Macedonia, with fin…

Stoltenberg: Macedonia must change Name before NATO invitation

Image
Stoltenberg says Invitation to NATO membership for Skopjes government once the Treaty with Greece is fulfilled.
NATO leaders have formally invited Macedonia to start membership talks with the alliance, while cautioning that it can't be completed until the name issue is resolved.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said, if the agreement with Greece will be fullfilled, Skopje will be asked to begin accession negotiations with NATO.
Stoltenberg stated at Tuesday’s conference ahead of the two-day Summit in Brussels, Macedonia will become a NATO member using the new name Republic of Northern Macedonia.

NATO said on Wednesday also that "solution of the name issue is a condition for a successful conclusion of the accession process.

Macedonian airports handled over 1 million passengers by mid-2018

Image
Exactly 1,041,583 passengers were handled at the two airports in Macedonia in the first months of 2018. A annual increase of 21% was registered compared to the first half of last year, TAV Macedonia - the company operating the airports in Skopje and Ohrid - said in a press release.
The number of flights at the two Macedonian airports from January until June marked an annual rise of 16%, it added.
"While airports across Europe have an average passenger traffic increase of 6,1% in 2018, TAV continues to register high double digit increase in passenger’s traffic at the Macedonian airports. This positive trend in air traffic growth confirms that the Macedonian aviation market has big potentials. We will continue to put our best efforts to develop  the airports in Skopje and Ohrid by attracting new airlines and expanding the destinations’ network, in cooperation with all competent state authorities," said Alper Ersoy, TAV Macedonia General Manager.

Stoltenberg: Invitation to NATO membership once the Treaty with Greece is fulfilled

Image
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expects that following the agreement with Greece, Macedonia will be asked to begin accession negotiations with NATO.
Stoltenberg stated at today’s pre-conference, Macedonia will become a NATO member using the new name Republic of Northern Macedonia.
“I expect that after the historic agreement reached last month in the name dispute, we will invite Skopje to commence membership negotiations. When the agreement is finalized and implemented, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia will be invited to become the 30th NATO member under its new name, the Republic of Northern Macedonia. This is a sign that NATO’s doors are and will remain open”, said Stoltenberg, MIA’s correspondent reported from Brussels.

Shekerinska: We are getting an invitation for NATO the day after tomorrow, lets not miss this chance

Image
It is quite certain that on 11th of July, Macedonia will receive an invitation for accession talks for the NATO Summit, which is expected to be relatively short – three to six months – a procedure which is identical to the last countries which became NATO members, i.e. Montenegro, Albania and Croatia, and then the Accession Protocol has to be signed, after which its ratification will begin with all member states, and then, we will be “de facto” with NATO, because then we will participate in a big part of the NATO procedures. It remains only to complete the procedure in the country, with the referendum and the constitutional changes, in order to remove the last obstacles. For a long period of time the opposition has been stressing that the EU and NATO are the strategic commitments for Macedonia, and now, it is not serious by the opposition to block this road because of the small political points, said Defense Minister Radmila Sekerinska and the national NATO co-ordinator Stevo Pendaro…

Image
Hundreds gathered at a protest against the name agreement in the Greek town of Vergina on Monday, MIA reports from Athens.
Protesters, including church officials and the governor of Central Macedonia region Apostolos Tzitzikostas, waved Greek flags and shouted "Macedonia is Greek".
"If our neighbors are Macedonians, then what are we?" asked Metropolitan Panteleimon in his address before the crowd, saying the name agreement goes against the interest of the Greek people.

Greece’s opposition New Democracy will not vote to ratify name agreement with Macedonia

Image
Greece's opposition New Democracy party will not vote for ratification of name agreement irrespective of what kind of majority will government form, MIA correspondent in Athens reports.
Commenting the statement of the leader of the junior partner in Greece's coalition government for asking 180 lawmakers instead of a simple majority of 151 votes for name deal ratification, New Democracy party said “there are no words to describe Panos Kammenos,” who is “the epitome of political self-humiliation.”
The statement that the Prespa agreement should be ratified by 180 lawmakers, but also that he would vote against, will remain in history as the epitome of political self-humiliation. New Democracy will not ratify the agreement irrespective of what kind of majority Tsipras and Kammenos will form. Together they have signed and fully bear the responsibility for the finished things that have already been created in Greece, New Democracy party told, adding that it is necessary elections to…

Kotzias: I hope Prespa deal sets shining example of how to solve regional problems

Image
During his opening speech at the Rhodes Conference for Security and Stability on Thursday, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said he hoped the Prespa deal would be implemented and set a shining example of how to solve problems in the region, MIA's Athens correspondent reports.
FM Kotzias said the Prespa compromise 'showed that no one can drive the other side into a corner.'
"We cannot live motivated by revanchism and irredentism. We need to accept reality and find ways of living together," Kotzias said. "There's no conflict between North Macedonians and Greeks, in fact, but between forces that seek a solution and the forces of inertia comfortable with no solution."
Kotzias said his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Dimitrov could not attend the conference because he was in the Macedonian Parliament, 'fighting for the deal we signed.'
Speaking about the region, the Greek FM noted that cooperation on the northern Greek border has improved sinc…

Macedonia, Slovenia and Montenegro to host women's European Handball Championship

Image
EHF confirmed at the meeting in Glasgow that Macedonia, Slovenia and Montenegro will organize the women's European Handball Championship in 2022.
This outcome was already known before, because the joint candidacy of Macedonia, Slovenia and Montenegro was the only organization for the European Women's Championship in 2022. But from today it is officially.
The original plan is for four groups to play in Skopje, Podgorica, Ljubljana and Celje. And the whole finish will be in Ljubljana. This means that Macedonia would only host the group where our national team will play, the matches will be played at SC "Boris Trajkovski".
The EHF also confirmed that the European Championship in 2022 for men will be held in Hungary and Slovakia.

Zaev: We should not miss the historic chance

Image
The agreement marks the beginning of the end of uncertainty for Macedonia and represents dignified and acceptable solution for both sides, with which the Macedonian identity and language is permanently confirmed, PM Zoran Zaev said Wednesday prior to start of parliament’s session at which name agreement with Greece should be ratified.
“We have an agreement with a clear mark of our Macedonian identity, of our Macedonian language, forever. We did not give anything to anyone, nor did anyone take anything when we agreed on a geographical qualifier. This is a bold step in the interest of the future of citizens and our children for a peaceful future. Let's dismiss the manipulations, elimination and xenophobia and offer a chance to the agreement. The citizens will have the final say,” Zaev said.
He said that the agreement is supported by all international partners, it opens the doors of Macedonia towards a European future. Zaev expects European Council give Macedonia a date for start of…

May: Agreement with Greece opens doors to EU and NATO for Macedonia

Image
In a letter to Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, UK Prime Minister, Theresa May congratulated Macedonia on reaching an agreement with Greece, as well as the ratification agreement reached in Parliament, announced the Government.
“Such a meaningful achievement would not have been possible without political courage, vision and leadership, as the two of you have shown. As we discussed before in Skopje, resolving this issue will bring enormous benefits to the two countries, as well as the greater region”, reads the letter from Prime Minister Theresa May.
She added in her letter, that finally, after 25-years of the long-standing dispute, the wishes of the majority of citizens, who want to see their country become NATO and EU members, will open the doors for these aspirations.
She pledged the United Kingdom’s support for Macedonia’s bid to join NATO.

Macedonian Parliament ratifying Agreement with Greece

Image
Macedonian Parliament with 69 votes in favor, without any votes “against” and no abstentions, ratified the Agreement with Greece regarding settling the name dispute. MPs of the opposition party VMRO-DPMNE boycotted the session and did not attend.
At the beginning of the debate, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev said that the Agreement signed in Prespa was a solution to a dispute that was has been traumatic for Macedonia for over three decades and that this was the beginning of the end of the uncertainty that threatened to go on without end.
“We have achieved a dignified and acceptable solution for both parties. The signatures in Prespa have protected our identity for centuries and centuries. We did not give anything to anybody, nor has anyone taken anything from us. This brave act is a solution that is in the interest of the citizens to both countries. We have risen above fear and I appeal for a rejection to the confines of isolation and xenophobia and give this solution a chance, finally it…

Macedonia is About To Become The World’s First “Politically Correct” Police State

Image
George Orwell’s dire warning about a “politically correct” police state is about to become a reality in the Republic of Macedonia if the country implements its recently signed agreement with Greece, as there are many provisions within that document which obligate Skopje to suppress its citizens’ freedom of speech under pane of being taken to the UN and/or the International Court of Justice, and to top it all off, Athens will have the authority to jointly determine what Macedonian children are taught in school as well as what “politically incorrect” expressions & concepts should be banned by the authorities.
There’s no “polite” way to phrase this – the Republic of Macedonia is on the brink of becoming a “politically correct” police state if it capitulates to the Liberal-Globalists and their regional Greek proxy. This isn’t an exaggeration but a statement of fact considering the Orwellian clauses contained within the recently signed name deal which obligate Skopje to essentially su…

20,000 Macedonians protest in front of Parliament

Image
Over 20,000 Macedonians spontaneously gathered this evening in front of Parliament, sending strong messages to the treasonous Government junta led by Zaev.
Protesters demanded the quisling junta not go against the will of the people, because that would escalate the situation in the country, and urged an immediate annulment of the agreement between Zaev and Tsipras, the same way they did it – over the phone. Protesters pledged to gather in front of Parliament until the abolition of the agreement and the withdrawal of the referendum decision!
The demonstrators gave strong support to President Gjorge Ivanov and told him that they would always be there along with him, in good and bad.
They asked for a public hanging of Zoran Zaev, the illegitimate prime minister and traitor. Hangings were requested for Zaev’s associates as well.
The protesters emphasized that the protest had people from all political parties and all ethnicities, asking no one to associate them with any political option.

Russian Embassy warns: Pro Zaev media publishes fake news in Macedonia

Image
The Russian Embassy in Skopje has twitted and warned Macedonians not to trust the pro Zaev local media who has published fake reports on statements allegedly made by Lavrov in which he supports the agreement between Macedonia and Greece.
Lavrov has never endorsed the agreement, in fact, the Russian foreign ministry has warned that any agreement between the two countries must be fully agreed by its people, likely referring to Macedonians and the fact the country is governed by an illegitimate Government who does not represent the people. Furthermore the RFA has warned the continual meddling of western nations in Macedonia’s internal affairs won’t end well for the future of the country.

Germany believes that Macedonia deserves recognition from the entire EU

Image
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas at a press conference with Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov in Berlin said Germany supports the agreement reached between Macedonia and Greece, which he considers a solution achieved through a common understanding that will bring change among the citizens.
He said that the EU and NATO decisions will be a very important signal and stressed that what Macedonia has achieved in meeting the criteria and the reform process really impresses and deserves recognition from the entire EU.
This solution is good, we will support the process for joining the country in the EU. We have been impressed by the reform process that has been going on in Macedonia in recent years. The country has been showing results and should receive recognition from the entire European Union. We suggest that you show determination. I hope that decisions which will be made in the future in relation to NATO and the EU will be an important signal for the people of your country and will g…

The Last Macedonian refuses Zaev-Tsipras deal

Image
The agreement between the prime ministers of Macedonia and Greece does not unite the society, but additionally polarizes it. I will strive for a solution that will not violate the dignity of the Macedonian people and the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia, President Gjorge Ivanov said when he addressed the public and went on to announced that he did not intend to sign the agreement that Skopje and Athens had reached.
I told Zaev and Dimitrov that this is their personal agreement and therefore their responsibility. This damaging agreement means abandonment of the existing essential positions, not to have amendments of the Constitution, and the non-acceptance of a name for overall use, i.e. erga omnes. This is a harmful deal, the only one in the history of mankind, and for me it is undignified and unacceptable. I will not legalize illegal political constructs. The text of the agreement is self-defeating for Macedonia. It is planned to change the preamble and all the articles of the…

Dimitrov: The deal is not ideal, but it must fulfill the most important interests of both parties

Image
Is the deal ideal? Of course not. But let’s not forget that every successful agreement must fulfill the most important interests of both parties.
This was written by Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov on his Facebook profile. He took to the social media page after the agreement reached with Greece.
“Have we done everything we can in the circumstances? Did we get the maximum, without endangering the deal? Absolutely and that’s why I will defend it with all my heart. Why did we push ourselves into this? So we can look in the mirror and tell ourselves we’ve done everything for a better future. We did it, to protect our identity and dignity, to sleep at eas, with a peaceful conscience”, wrote Dimitrov.
He added that “there is no greater responsibility than facing ones biggest problem, a problem that has obstructed our future for decades, which pulls us down like a stone tied to the statehood in the stormy waters of the Balkans.”
“It is a responsibility to create a chance, to offer the citi…

Kotzias: Zaev has accepted North Macedonia and constitutional changes

Image
In an interview with TV Kontra, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias commented on the telephone conversation between Zaev-Tsipras. While Zaev did not give any more detailed information on the topic, Kotzias triumphantly and somewhat staged celebrated the long awaited phone conversation between Zaev and Tsipras with a public appearance. Namely Kotzias stated that Zaev accepted the name North Macedonia, and the issue of the Constitution was resolved, as he said at the initiative of Skopje.
“Today’s was a decisive step,” Nikos Kotzias said, referring to the telephone communication between Alexis Tsipras and Zoran Zaev. “If negotiations are concluded tomorrow, the name talks will be completed,” he said, speaking about today’s interview with the two prime ministers. “He chose what he wanted, he already did,” referring to Zaev.
Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias revealed that the name North Macedonia was allegedly selected by Zaev (even though Athens floated the idea at least 10 years ago), an…

Kotzias: Zaev agreed to change the name of Macedonia

Image
We have many common interests with Macedonia and if we find a solution to the name, the two countries will become closest friends in the Balkans, said the Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias.
"We are looking for sustainable, long-term agreement with Macedonia. The goal of the Greek foreign policy is to solve problems, not to stay with problems. The issue with Macedonia is subordinated to the main geopolitical and geostrategic problems that we have with Turkey.", says Kotzias.
The Greek Foreign Minister said Zaev had already agreed to change the name.

Bulgarian Orthodox Church underlines stance on Ohrid Archbishopric

Image
The Bulgarian Orthodox Church held its own celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the Ohrid Archbishopric on June 10, having turned down an invitation to attend the Macedonian Orthodox Church's celebration on May 27 and 28.

On the occasion, which was marked with a liturgy at Sofia's landmark Alexander Nevsky cathedral with the presence of Bulgarian Orthodox Church Patriarch Neofit, the Holy Synod issued a lengthy statement outlining its stance on relations with the church in the neighbouring former Yugoslav republic.
The Holy Synod's statement said that in the past more than half a year, the attention of the church and the public in Bulgaria had been particularly focused on the neighbouring country and the status of the Orthodox Church there "which, unfortunately, for decades has resided outside of communion with the family of local Orthodox churches".
The statement noted that the Macedonian Orthodox Church had asked the Bulgarian Orthodox Chur…

Pandev may return to Inter

Image
Newspaper sport reported that the captain of Macedonia could re-dress Inter's shirt.

Newspaper sport writes that the best Macedonian player, 34-year-old Goran Pandev, who has not yet extended his contract with Genoa, could return to Inter. According to information transmitted by the Italian media, Pandev is mentioned as the ideal solution for reinforcing the reserve striker options for the Milan team, for Mauro Icardi.
However, we will emphasize that Inter's priority is Nikolas Gonzalez of Argentinos Juniors, and if he does not realize his transfer, then the option among most is Pandev.
As a reminder, Pandev was part of Inter in the 2009/10 season when Milan team led by Jose Mourinho reached the historic "triple".

Greek Government expresses optimism for name deal with Skopje

Image
Greek government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said he is optimistic that a deal can be reached with the Republic of Macedonia in the decades-old name row, in an interview with newspaper Nea Selida, published on Sunday.
Tzanakopoulos said Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias have secured all necessary safeguards to ensure that Skopje will meet all its obligations required to achieve a deal.
Commenting on the reaction from main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, he said that by the time he decides on his position on a possible Greece-Macedonia  deal, "he will have lost any remaining traces of credibility."

Macedonia: Skopje hit by heavy rains and strong winds

Image
Heavy rains and strong winds hit Macedonian capital of Skopje on Saturday, causing flooding and road blocking.
According to the Macedonian hydro-meteorological authority, the wind reached the speed of 80 km per hour.
The bad weather caused the blockade of roads for falling trees, damaging cars and flooding.
But the Fire Protection Brigade stated that there are no reports on serious damages.

Serbian daily close to Zaev reports negotiations have failed

Image
Serbian daily Kurir, whose owner Aleksandar Rodic has deep ties with Soros and is a close friend of Zaev has just reported that the negotiations between Skopje and Athens have failed after the Greek side insisted on complete removal of the name Macedonia, thus reneging on all agreements that were made in New York.
According to Kurir, despite serious efforts by Zaev and Dimitrov to accept literally anything from the Greek side, Athens abused the weakness of the Macedonian negotiating side by making more and more demands.
There is likely some meat to this report, considering the close relationship between Zaev and Rodic, however whatever the case might be we’ll find out in the next 24 hours, if not sooner.

Over 60 pct of Macedonian patients die from cardiovascular disease

Image
Over 60 percent of Macedonian patients die as a result of cardiovascular disease because of malnutrition and lack of physical activity, according to the official data of the Macedonian Institute of Public Health.
In October 2017 the Macedonian Ministry of Health on the occasion of World Food Day announced that the ministry in cooperation with the respective inspectorate would engage to improve citizens' habits and overall health in terms of healthy nutrition.
Meanwhile, doctors in Macedonia underline that the Food Inspectorate should make stricter controls regarding the products sold in the stores on which few citizens are aware of.
Igor Spiroski, a co-worker in coordinating the activities of the Ministry of Health in Macedonia with the World Health Organization suggests that more work be done to raise citizens' awareness of the factors that cause overweight.
For Spiroski, the most problematic is the overweight, which is more and more present in children.

Zaev still optimistic on name deal with Greece

Image
Macedonia's prime minister says he is still optimistic a decades-old dispute with Greece over his country's name can be settled soon, a day after thousands of Greeks attended rallies against a potential compromise.
Zoran Zaev said Thursday that while a very delicate issue the dispute should be solved as soon as possible. The 27-year disagreement has frustrated Macedonia's efforts to join NATO and the European Union.
Zaev said summit meetings planned by both organizations later this month should serve as a deadline for further progress in the talks, which started earlier this year.
Both countries have voiced willingness to make progress, and optimism that the dispute can be solved.
Greece claims its neighbor's name implies claims on its own northern province of Macedonia. Macedonia denies that.

Ex-Yu Aviation: Austrian complains over Macedonian LCC subsidies

Image
Austrian Airlines has complained that the subsidies provided by the Macedonian government to stimulate low cost airlines to operate flights to the country are unfair and distort competition. The carrier noted it is difficult to compete in such an environment and under such circumstances. Although it has no direct competition on its double daily flights between Vienna and Skopje, rival Wizz Air will commence services from the Austrian capital to Ohrid this October. Vienna was the third busiest route out of Macedonia last year following Istanbul (both international airports) and Zurich. The Macedonian government has announced it will soon offer 880.000 euros per year over a three-year period to stimulate budget airlines to introduce new routes to the country, particularly to Ohrid. Tender procedures to award the subsidies are expected to commence this month.
The government has adopted the Program for Determining Funds Needed for Granting Financial Support to Domestic and Foreign Air Ca…

FIFA rankings: Macedonia jumps 6 places

Image
The Macedonian national team did not play any matches but still recorded increase in points which resulted into moving up six places on the newest FIFA world ranking list for June. Macedonia now marks the 71st rank in the list with 451 points, right after the host of the upcoming World Cup - Russia (457 points).
In this pre World Cup period when all national teams play friendly matches, Macedonia was inactive. The football federation failed to find an opponent after St. Kitts and Nevis cancelled their visit to Skopje and later the negotiation for a friendly against Iran on neutral field in Turkey ended up negative.
Despite not playing a game, Macedonia jumped six places having 19 points more than the previous month. This is thanks to the fact that some old negative results got erased and the teams places above the Lynx lost points and dropped places.

Kay Hutchison: NATO will protect Macedonia from Russian aggression

Image
The outcome of the name talks is anticipated at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Macedonia meets all the conditions, the final step is completing the name negotiations for Macedonia to join NATO at the upcoming summit in July, said US Ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison.
From the previous summits, it is clear that NATO is ready to start the accession talks with Macedonia once the name issue is resolved. I believe that the ministers in both countries are working very hard to reach a mutually acceptable solution to the name issue. Once an agreement is reached and the key requirement is fulfilled, I think that Macedonia will start the process of accession to NATO. NATO was clear that Macedonia meets the requirements, except for the name and as soon as this is resolved, we wish for Macedonia to be an equal partner. The United States strongly supports the accession of Macedonia and we hope that this will happen at the upcoming Summit, but what is now required of both countries is to co…

Macedonian Government silent over Zaev-Tsipras conversation

Image
Yesterday, Macedonian government spokesman Mile Bosnjakovski at a press conference in government did not specify where the negotiations are and whether there are chances of a meeting or telephone conversation between the prime ministers of Greece and Macedonia by the end of the week.
Bosnjakovski did not want to comment on VMRO-DPMNE’s Antonio Milososki’s Facebook status, who wrote that on Thursday or Friday the meeting between Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras will take place at Mala Prespa.
“We are at an official press conference in the Government of the Republic of Macedonia. We shouldn’t comment on unofficial information regardless of the sources they came from, especially if they do not have credibility and legitimacy”, said Bosnjakovski.
Regarding the question, whether there will be a possible meeting or phone call between Zaev-Tsipras by the end of this week, he said the government’s attitudes remain the same, and will not respond to speculation.
“We believe this issue is extremel…
