Greeks Force Twitter Apology from EP President

Image
Newly elected European Parliament spokesman, Italian conservative Antonio Tajani, was forced by Greek Parliamentarians to take to twitter and explain his position on the heritage of Alexander the Great. Greeks were angered with Tajani after, during one of his visits to Macedonia to meet with the fellow conservative VMRO-DPMNE party, he spoke about the legacy of the legendary conqueror.

"Macedonia is a beautiful country. Everyone in Italy knows Macedonia. Why? Because Alexander the Great and Philip of Macedon are very popular ancestors of yours", Tajani said during his visit.
Greek members of European Parliament bothered Tajani over the remarks until he got to twitter on Thursday, and in Greek language wrote that Alexander was Greek. Members of Parliament from all Greek parties were demanding an apology from Tajani, until they got the twitter comment. MIA correspondent in Atens reports that Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias also got in the fray, Speaking in the Greek Parl…

Macedonian Handball Team Knocked out of World Championship

Image
Macedonia's depleted team was knocked out of the Handball World Championship by Norway on Saturday evening, after a game that ended 34:24. Coach Lino Cervar and team captain Kiril Lazarov said that injuries to Filip Mirkulovski and Dejan Manaskov were the main reason that Macedonia was not able to put up more of a fight against the Norwegians.

"It would have been different if we had Deki and Zhuti in the team. We resisted well in the first half, we played well, but we also missed a lot of good chances. It is what it is. Norway is a world class team, after all. We were third in a very strong group, we played a very good game against Spain, and then had a difficult match against Norway with only one ady to rest. On top of it all, came the injuries. It is a pity", said Lazarov, who was top scorer of the entire Championship in the group stage.
Coach Cervar added that Norway was a better team.
"We lost our strength in the second half. We can be proud on the players"…

Image
The Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs (DG ECFIN) of the European Commission said it forecasts 3.2% economic growth in Macedonia in 2017, down from its previous projection of 3.5% growth unveiled in October. Macedonia's economic growth is estimated at 2.1% in 2016, DG ECFIN said in its January 2017 EU Candidate & Potential Candidate Countries’ Economic Quarterly (CCEQ) Report. "Political uncertainties had weighed on the economy in 2016 as private investment slowed down markedly," the directorate said. Macedonia held early parliamentary elections on December 11 after a prolonged political crisis and is expected to form a government these days.  The EC economic affairs directorate expects Macedonia's consumer price inflation to slightly increase in 2017, to 0.9% from 0.1% forecast for 2016. Private sector annual credit growth slowed down during the second half of the year, the directorate noted. Household loans continued to expand, but loans to …

Macedonia Drew with Iceland, to Play against Norway

Image
In a large match with excellent finish the selection of Macedonia came to a draw against Iceland by 27:27, but this tie is a straight win for our team as it put them against Norway in the eight finals.
Macedonia had a difficult task because after Wednesday night's strong match against Spain on Thursday we had a new great game against Iceland which was a clash for the 3rd position of the table. It was clear that we must not lose, and the tradition was showing just that. Although things carried no positive progress for the most part, however, eventually we got what we wanted.
Iceland was five goals ahead in five minutes remaining of the match, but failed to preserve this positive. Macedonia played in this part of the match without Filip Mirkulovski who got injured, but the team managed to play a great game and thus to reach the big twist, and even take the lead. However, when the players had to make the winning strike, they made a mistake. In the latest offensive Iceland pushed wit…
