Serbia has started erecting a barbed-wire fence at its southern border with Macedonia, with the goal of blocking illegal migrants from entering the country without a visa, according to reports from news agency AFP, local media outlets in Belgrade and Radio Free Europe, as well as Macedonian media reported.
Now the EU commented the issue: The European Union has rejected the claims that the building of a wire fence between Serbia and Macedonia is part of an agreement with Serbia.
As was announced by the EU Commission’s spokeswoman, Ana Pisonero, Brussels is providing significant financial and technical aid to its Western Balkans partners in managing migration and for that purpose, it has allocated over 100 million EUR for Serbia.
“Still, those funds do not include building fences that, as it was wrongly reported, were not part of any agreement with the EU,” said Pisonero.
