Six weeks after the head coach Soe Myat Min has left, Taunggyi- based Shan United signed an agreement to hire Macedonian coach Marjan Sekulovski on Saturday in Yangon.
The Macedonia coach used to be the coaches of the Ayeyawady and Yangon.
A statement made by the Shan United on April 28 said the decision had been made to defend their MNL trophy and to get better results in domestic league.
“Shan United is title holder team. We must prepare to overcome any possible trouble. Our first target is to defend our trophy that’s why we signed to hire Marjan Sekulovski. He is an experienced manager in Myanmar national league,” Shan United’s president U Kun Naung Myint Wai said.
Shan United, the reigning league champion and holder of the knock-out General Aung San Shield, has only 17 points after 9 matches in the 2018 MNL. The team is in fourth place, six points different with their main rival Yangon United, with just one victory in this year’s AFC Cup so far.
Marjan Sekulovski, 45, is one of popular foreign coaches in Myanmar National League. He joined Ayeyawady United in 2012 as head coach. Ayeyawady United won knock-out cup twice under him in 2012 and 2015. And he also was head coach of Yangon United in 2016.
“My first target is to defend champion trophy. I think Shan United can do that,” said Marjan Sekulovski.
“Shan United is one of big teams in MNL. They are traditional team as well as current champion team. I’m very proud to become head coach for this kind of team,” He added.
“It is the right decision. he is experienced coach in MNL. His performance is impressive with Ayeyawady United,” football fan Ko Zaw said referring to The Shan United’s facebook page.
“I welcome the [new] coach and thanks to Shan United for its decision. I hope our Shan United team can definitely defend champion trophy,” said Nway Nway Thet, a football fan.
Shan United made a contract with Marjan Sekulovski up to the end of 2018 football season.
Currently, they played 10 games in this season and they have 12 remaining matches.
