At the traditional breakfast organized by the MP’s Clubhouse in Skopje, Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs, Bujar Osmani, warned of the risks of stratification and extremism in Macedonia if they do not start negotiations for EU membership soon
“The loss of hope for EU and NATO membership will mean that young people will continue to leave the country which will reduce labour and opportunities for development and growth. The loss of hope will also trigger strong EU ‘fatigue’, Euro-skepticism and will increase anti-NATO sentiment. The division of the population on ethnic, religious and social grounds will deepen and will cause democratic institutions to become vulnerable as well as their capacity to govern. It will also lead to a decrease in levels of resistance and create fertile soil for interference and greater influence by other countries. It will open up a vacuum for potential violent groups, thereby increasing the risk of terrorism, extremism and nationalism”, he warned.
At the event organized by the Secretariat for European Affairs on the occasion of Europe Day, May 9, the ambassadors of EU Member States in Macedonia, former deputy prime ministers for European Affairs, as well as other forein representatives in Macedonia attended.
