While people Macedonia is sweltering under a heatwave, the high temperatures have apparently contributed to better than expected development of the rice fields.
Rice experts expect higher yields from the 2.500 hectares covered in rice paddies this year, and say that the weather conditions have been ideal for the staple food.
Area under rice has been halved this year to save water in the Kalimanci reservoir near Kocani, where most of the Macedonian rice is produced, but the expected high yield should make up for the reduction in the size of the paddies.
