SDSM and DUI in No Rush for Municipal Election

Although there was an initial deal among the parties to hold municipal election, it could all go stale. The parliamentary majority rejected VMRO-DPMNE's proposal to schedule the local election ugently. This raised a dilemma on whether SDSM, DUI and Alliance for Albanians want to go on municipal election or are afraid to face the citizens.

As things are looking, the municipal ballots are only in favor of VMRO-DPMNE and BESA. The Albanian opposition has won more support in its voting mass, particularly after it said it will not participate in the new Government. These two parties will likely win the majority of the votes, hence the fear of SDSM of snap election.

Due to the expired mandate of mayors, municipalities have been facing issues with functioning. At the moment, mayors are acting as technical mayors, without jurisdiction.

Ilija Dimovski of VMRO-DPMNE said that the party will propose a law because there is still doubt whether the newly-formed Government majority will sincirely respect the agreement made three weeks ago, to schedule local election on October 15, as agreed between all parliamentary parties.

"In the meantime all mayors and councils of self-government units should have their mandate extended, regardless of the party they belong to, due to the problems they have been facing some three weeks now," Dimovski said.
