Macedonia under orange-alert heatwave

Starting Friday and throughout the weekend, Macedonia will be gripped by an orange-alert heatwave, says the Ministry of Health.

It recommends that pregnant women and people over 60 should be given days off and urges all others to see a doctor if they experience heat-related illnesses.

Employers are called on to reorganize working hours so as to avoid outdoor activities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and to ensure a break out of the sun and provide drinking water every two hours.

The Health Ministry recommends that sporting outdoor activities be cancelled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Also, children attending kindergartens should not be allowed to exercise outdoors during the same period.

In the coming three days, the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy and the Red Cross of Macedonia will be taking measures to accommodate homeless people.

People are urged to follow general recommendations to protect themselves against the heatwave, including protection from direct sun exposure, avoiding going out from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., wearing white and light clothes, eating non-greasy food and drinking a lot of water.
